Want to speed up the sync of the Dogecoin Core Wallet?
I certainly didn’t have weeks to wait for it to synchronise with the network! So decided to see the best way to speed this up.
As you have probably already seen, Reddit whilst great, it has a LOT of out of date information. Below I will try to keep this as up to date as possible so that you have the best chance on not having to wait weeks.
If you find this useful please consider donating a few Dogecoins to my wallet address on the right 😊
**** THE LATEST VERSION OF DOGECOIN CORE IS REQUIRED FOR THIS METHOD, AS THE BLOCKCHAIN WAS CREATED FROM IT. IT WILL NOT WORK FOR OLDER VERSIONS ****
The first thing to do is back up your wallet if you already have Dogecoin Core installed on your computer. It is always recommended that you keep a backup of at least your wallet.dat file. This is the file that stores all your coins! So keep it somewhere safe and always keep an up-to-date version. If you lose it or it gets corrupted and you don’t have a backup, you lose all your coins. Trust me, it will save you if you have to go for the nuclear option and start again.
Below are the default locations for where your wallet.dat file will be stored:
Note: The AppData folder may be hidden for you, so you will need to enable hidden folders in the File Explorer to see it and browse through. If you are unsure about how to do this, this link from the Microsoft website will help you achieve this.
- Mac OS
- Used a custom location for Dogecoin Core
Open Dogecoin Core –> Click Help –> Select Debug Console –> On the information tab the “datadir” is where you have installed it and where your wallet.dat file is stored.
This will also be the location of your blockchain which we will overwrite later, this is the part that will speed up the sync massively!
*** However, for the last time BACK UP THE WALLET.DAT FILE ***
Dogecoin Core v1.14.3
First thing to do is make sure you download the latest version of the Dogecoin Core Wallet, at this moment it is v1.14.3. Click here to get it from the official website.
In this section we will download the bootstrap of the Blockchain. For those interested in what the Blockchain actually is, this is essentially every transaction ever made for Dogecoin. In order for transactions to be confirmed, the application has to see all transactions in the blockchain.
The bootstrap is large therefore the best way to distribute this is by a torrent. Below are the details of the file:
Blockchain Sync Date – 2021-04-16
Blockchain Size – 47.1GB (torrent file is much smaller)
Torrent file – Download here.
Magnet link – Magnet
Whilst the bootstrap is downloading follow the steps below to prepare Dogecoin Core Wallet for getting the updated bootstrap:
- Stop Dogecoin Core Wallet.
Make sure it is not running in your Task Manager/Activity Monitor.
- Backup wallet.dat.
Make sure you have a backup copy of your wallet.dat file (in case you didn’t see it above, this is important!)
- Navigate to your Dogecoin Core Wallet Data Folder.
See Backup section above for the location.
- Delete the following folders and files:
*** DO NOT DELETE OR EDIT ANY OF THE OTHER FILES. ***
Move Downloaded Files
- Copy Folders & Files from torrent download:
Paste these folders and files into your Dogecoin Core Wallet Data folder.
- Change permissions.
Right click on each of the files and folders in the previous step (the copied ones in your data folder, not the torrent ones).
Select Properties –> Uncheck Read-Only –> OK –> OK (to apply to subfolders and files).
- Start Dogecoin Core Wallet
Once started up your app will now jump from years to sync to everything after the sync date above. It should now only take minutes/hours to sync instead of weeks/months!
